As a part of your Cookie Saver setup, you need to create one or more subdomains to be used with our service. It is critical to choose appropriate ones.
This guide explains how to correctly choose a subdomain(s) - a key factor in a successful installation.
Premise: You can have more than one subdomain in one setup as long as they belong to the same brand.
As an example, if you have multiple markets (like described below in case 4), you can enter multiple subdomains in the setup process. E.g. "fpc.www.your-site.dk" and "fpc.www.your-site.se".
We recommend that you add all your markets, or similar, at once, even if you plan on rolling it out one site at a time. Having the extra subdomains makes it a lot easier when you do roll Cookie Saver out on the remaining sites. Adding subdomains later requires a new setup with a separate subscription.
Once you have decided on your subdomains, simply enter them during the setup process on https://my.cookiesaver.io
Requirements
If your cookies are only stored in the root domain, it will be the root domain that you should make a subdomain for to be used with Cookie Saver (see how to identify the cookies affected by ITP). If in doubt, please see the cases below (note that your requirements might be a combination of multiple cases):
Case 1: My website is accessible through company.com
Setup: Subdomain should be "under" company.com, e.g. fpc.company.com, cookiesaver.company.com, etc.
Note that you may be redirected from company.com to www.company.com. To check if this happens, visit your website by typing in the domain in the address bar without the www prefix. Once the page has loaded, look at the address bar again. If the domain now starts with www, follow the instruction in case 2 below.
Case 2: My website is accessible through www.company.com
Setup: Subdomain should be "under" www.company.com, e.g. fpc.www.company.com, cookiesaver.www.company.com, etc.
Case 3: My website is accessible through both company.com and www.company.com
Setup: Subdomain should be "under" the most granular domain www.company.com, e.g. fpc.www.company.com, cookiesaver.www.company.com, etc.
Case: My website consists of multiple subdomains/subsites, e.g. company.com, support.company.com and shop.company.com
Setup: Subdomain should be "under" each domain, e.g. 3 subdomains:
- For company.com the subdomain can be fpc.company.com
- For support.company.com the subdomain can be fpc.support.company.com
- For shop.company.com the subdomain can be fpc.shop.company.com
Note: If all cookies are placed in the root domain (e.g. company.com), only a subdomain for company.com (e.g. fpc.company.com) will need to be created.
Case 4: My website has multiple language domains, e.g. company.dk, company.se, company.no, company. com
Setup: Subdomain should be "under" each domain, e.g. 4 subdomains:
- For company.dk the subdomain can be fpc.company.dk
- For company.se the subdomain can be fpc.company.se
- For company.no the subdomain can be fpc.company.no
- For company.com the subdomain can be fpc.company.com
Note: Case 2 may also apply in this case. In that case, the chosen subdomain should be of the form fpc.www.company.dk, and so on.
Example
Your company has the following website: www.company.com
The default subdomain used with Cookie Saver is fpc (First Party Cookie), making the subdomain for www.company.com, fpc.www.company.com. We strongly recommend keeping the default 'fpc'.
However, if you do have a reason to do otherwise, nothing stops you from using cookies.www.company.com, cookiesaver.www.company.com, welovecookies.www.company.com, etc.
